10 Aug. 2016 – Another Lebanese athlete was in action today at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, with Mona Shaito facing her opponent from the United States in the fencing competition! Unfortunately, Mona could not overcome Kiefer Lee, who is no doubt one of the toughest fencers at the game. She won the game in 2 rounds, 15-3.
The draw was indeed not very favorable for the Lebanese fencer, but Shaito’s qualification to the games is what made us proud as we were extremely happy to have a Lebanese athlete in fencing.
“I think because last Olympics I had a match that was not strong right aways, this time I had a match that is strong right aways and you have to focus from the beginning which I didn’t do. I had to remember that this is someone who is top in the world not just top american.
Mona, who trains in the US, had the opportunity to train with Lee Fierfer before the Olympics. “It’s an advantage and disadvantage because we get to train but we know how each other fence.”
Shaito, who participated in London Olympics in 2012 as well, will prepare for Tokyo 2020 but she said that she needs to change everything from the beginning especially in her mental preparation.
