15 Sep. 2016 – The 13th edition of the BLOM Bank Beirut Marathon will be held on the 13th of November 2016. This year’s slogan is PEACE, LOVE, RUN FOR THE LONG RUN.
This year, Beirut Marathon Association made some changes in the distance runs; they added the Half Marathon Individual and relay to their races which is 21.1km, they shortened the 10km to a 7km Fun Run and Special Needs, the 5km is now dedicated for the Youth and Mentally Challenged.
The Races:
- 42.195km Marathon, Special Needs & Relay
- 21.1km Half Marathon & Relay
- 7km Fun Run & Special Needs
- 5km Youth Race & Mentally Challenged
- 1km Run with Parents
In Lebanon the term Marathon took another direction, every long run is called by the public a marathon. We would like to insist on the fact that a Marathon is 42.195km.
The name comes from the greek legend that says that the Greek messenger Philippines, who was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon, crossed approximately this distance without stopping but who collapsed and died after delivering the message.
The Beirut 542 was created in order to encourage people who never ran this distance before to do it on Race day. The culture of running has increased in Lebanon since the first edition the race back in 2003, but a lot of improvements should be done in our society.
We hope to see more people running the Marathon this year.
