27 Sep. 2016 – After the new record of Nourhane El Couch, we decided to jump to the High jump event instead of going through the Long distances and Hurdles.
For the best 10 performances in the Long Distance, we decided to wait for the Beirut Marathon to be done, because there is still a chance for the runners to improve and push their limits as Nadine Kalot did during the Berlin Marathon.
In the high jump, we have two big names: Jean Claude Rabbath, the BEST ever athlete in athletics, winning a Gold medal during the Asian Games in 2006. He also qualified twice for the Olympic Games in 2000 and 2004. He jumped the National record of 2.27 twice. He leads the top 10 performances even after 2010.
In the women’s, Carine Bitchakjian was the big boss for more than 15 years! She jumped 1.54m in her last participation that was this year in 2016! She still holds the national record in High jump with 1.72m.
The new talents are also very well known today, Georges Ghafary was often called the next Jean Claude Rabbath. He jumped 2.00 when he’s only a 17 years old Youth. Nourhane El Couch continues her quest of records with 1.55m in high jump last week!
These two athletes are the future of high jump in Lebanon but they can’t be just two athletes, we need adversity in order to improve! When they become the best in Lebanon, then they will have to travel to compete with athletes who are better than them in order to continue their progression in competitions.

** Sami Itani is a Lebanese living in Finland, he jumped 2.06 in 2013, 2.02, 2.00, and 1.95 in 2014 but he competed for Finland therefore his records in the decathlon are not conisdered as Lebanese records. |
We can also see that in the women the number of athletes who entered the top 10 are more than the men. Eight women above 1.50m, while only 3 men jumped more than 1.93m. Logically, if we have these 8 athletes competing together in one competition, they should raise the bar over the 1.70m mark.
It is the same thing with the 3 men, they could raise the bar over 2m. But now that Jean Claude Rabbath, Carine Bitchakjian, Alik Tabakian and Nour Fakhoury retired from competition, we will be counting on the youth to elevate the level.
I will conclude with one tangible example: the Lebanese Open Clubs Championship 2016. The women, with Samantha Saikalis who jumped 1.65, and Nourhane El Couch who jumped 1.54, pushed Carine to deliver her best to take second place, and pushed Marie Samarany to go beyond 1.50m, where in previous years, the level was very low, and Carine used to win easily with only few trainings before the Open Clubs championship.
