Bayern Munich fall to tougher Atletico Madrid

29 Sep. 2016- After a semi-final defeat to Atletico Madid in last year’s Champions League, Bayern were surely looking for some form of redemption. Ending Atletico’s perfect season just might have done it. Unfortunately for the former, that wasn’t quite what happened. Despite having a 67% possession advantage, Atletico held on, and walked away with a 1-0 win.

Just like in the Real Madrid Borussia Dortmund game on Tuesday, both teams got off to a hot start. As the game went on, Bayern would dominate possession, but simply couldn’t find the back of the net. That was partially thanks to the excellent defense displayed by the hosts, along with a few saves by Oblak. With that being said, Bayern weren’t the only ones keeping the opposite goalie busy. Atletico hammered away at the newly appointed captain of the German international team, until taking the lead ten minuted before the break. Carrasco took full advantage of an excellent through-ball from France‘s own Antoine Griezmann, and finished it off with a superb strike on goal.

The second half looked pretty much like the first. Bayern dominated possession, and Atletico defended superbly. They did bend, but for at least that night, the hosts proved to be unbreakable. Once again Atletico Madrid made a statement in the Champions League, reminding teams they aren’t going down easy. Year after year they are the dark horse in Europe, but could this be the year they finally win it all.
