Nov 30. 2016- On their way to what would have been the first leg of the Sudamericana finals, Chapecoense’s plane crashed just shortly before arriving to its destination. Of the 76 players, and staff members that boarded the flight, 71 didn’t survive. They had never reached the final of this competition before, and have only been in Brazil’s first division for two years.
To honor their memory, teams around the world took the time during games, and training sessions to take a moment of silence to pay their respects to those lost in the crash along with their loved ones. The club’s fans filled their stadium to do the same. Fellow finalists Atletico Nacional have requested that Chapecoense be rewarded the title as a tribute to them. However, an official announcment has yet to be made.
