Dec 13. 2016– For the third time in four years, Ronaldo was awarded the prestigious FIFA Ballon d’Or for the fourth time in his illustrious career. Behind him was five time winner Lionel Messi followed by Antoine Griezmann. This marks the ninth consecutive year the Ballon d’Or has been awarded to either Messi, or Ronaldo since Kaka won it back in 2007.
Not to take anything away from the year Messi had, but the night went as expected. Not because of any leaked news released prior to last night, but because of the magnificent year Cristiano Ronaldo had. Guiding Real Madrid to their 11th UEFA Champions League crown, as well as Portugal to their UEFA Euro 2016 cup victory. Winning with both club, and country is probably what gave Ronaldo the edge this year. Messi did manage to take Argentina to the 2016 Copa America, but fell short in the final. He then announced his retirement from international football.
