01 Jan. 2017 – 2017 started with the horrible news of a terrorist attack in Istanbul, Turkey. A man wearing a Santa Clause costume entered a night club called Reina in the Ortakoy area at around 1:30 AM, and shot the people who were celebrating New Year’s Eve.
No one would have guessed that this horrible attack would end the life of the ATP personal trainer, the Lebanese Athletics champion and the Tadamon Fitness trainer Haykal Moussallem. The attack also took the life of Elias Wardini 26, a Sagesse Basketball fan and Fitness Zone personal trainer as well.
Haykal Moussallem was the Lebanese 100m champion. He also used to do long jump. He excelled in athletics and represented Lebanon at the Arab Games and the Asian Championship before ending his career due to injury.
After leaving the athletics’ world, he dedicated his life to sports by studying Physical Education at the Antonine University. He started his coaching career by specializing in sprints and long jump at Antonine Club for whom he used to compete. He then opened his own Sports Center “Athletics Training Performance” in Kaslik.
Haykal was the physical trainer of different basketball teams. Lately, he was helping Tadamon players get in shape for the basketball league.
The young man who was 34 years old just got married 6 months ago. His wife Mireille Khoury survived the accident. Around 20 Lebanese were attending this nightclub in Istanbul. Three Lebanese were killed including Elias, Haykal and a young woman named Rita El Chami, who left her Radio TV studies to stay with her mother before losing her fight against cancer.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.
