18 Jan. 2017 – Yes, we can call it a Cycling revolution. The first bike sharing station has been installed in our capital Beirut, near Le Gray and facing Samir Kassir’s garden.
“Bike 4 All” is the company behind the project. They fully financed the project leaving no burden on the municipality. The efforts of several people like Jawad Sbeity, Judge Ziad Cbeib governor of Beirut and The Beirut municipality cabinet headed by Mr Jamal Itani, payed off.
Jawad Sabeity announced on Facebook that “this project was fully financed by Beirut 4 All.” He added: “The first station was assembled in Beirut Downtown today. It’s a sample station that will be a prototype in order to develop 25 other stations; that will follow to cover all over Beirut, to reach 500 bikes hope to be available by the year 2020.”
This project will not only reduce pollution and traffic in our capital, but will also encourage citizens to use the bikes, therefore, do some sports activities rather than sit down in their cars waiting in traffic.
On the other hand, we should raise the question about our roads. Are they prepared for this project? Can we apply it in other cities? Obviously we will need predefined bike lanes in Beirut and other cities to avoid accidents and make this project safer for the users.
