21 Feb. 2017- Sports plays a big part in Shiva Karout’s life. In fact, Shiva’s father used to wake him up early to train ever since he was 4 and as a result, Shiva went on to compete and come out victorious in multiple championships. He started out in Judo where he won his first championship then moved to Mixed Martial Arts and won the Cedars Fighting Championship(CFC2) in 2016. Shiva also finished second in the 2014 Lebanese Boxing Championship. 3 years ago Shiva started powerlifting, a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. And on Saturday February 11th, Shiva won the Mount Lebanon Powerlifting Championship. We asked Shiva about his powerlifting experience.
How old are you and when did you being powerlifting?
I’m 27, I started when I was 24
What have you accomplished ever since?
I won the Lebanese Power Lifting Championship in 2016, finished first at the WRPF Boss of Boss 3 in Mount View California and broke the amateur world record in deadlift 251kg at 70kg body weight. I also won the Mount Lebanon Powerlifting Championship on Saturday.
How do you compare yourself to elite lifters?
I compare myself still as an almost elite lifter.
And what do you need to get on an international podium?
I still need a couple of kilos, therapeutic care and follow-up, as well as a nutritional follow up which I don’t have.
We hear that powerlifting can be dangerous, how true is this?
Every sport is risky, but powerlifting has low percentage of injuries but if an injury occurs it could be a lifetime damaging one.
