15 Jul. 2015 – The I3SAW (International Society of Sport Sciences in the Arab World) undertook in Spring 2015, under the direction of Dr.Nadim Nassif, I3SAW Communication Deputy, Notre-Dame University (Lebanon) Physical Education Academic Advisor and FIFA/CIES Sport Management program Manager, a research aiming at making the ranking of countries in elite sport for the year 2014.
This scientific project was first presented in March 2015 in Oran, Algeria for the 1st International Congress of the I3SAW. It then took place from March to July 2015.
The main purpose of this work is to find a measure tool to determine which countries are the most efficient in the establishing of sport policy focused on elite sport. The I3SAW intends to present these annual results to the different national sport authorities, media and scholars in the field of sport science.
The I3SAW ranking proposed methodology
1) The 2014 I3SAW ranking will only take in consideration results obtained in events that are part of the Summer and Winter Olympic programs.
2) The I3SAW ranking will be annual and take the results obtained before January 1st of each year. For example, for the 2014 rankings, the counting of results will stop at 12pm of December 31st 2014.
3) The I3SAW ranking will be based on points not on medals.
4) These points will be computed by sport and not by events. For example, the obtained points within the events of 100 M, 200 M, shot put, marathon etc… will be computed to determine the sport of Athletics ranking. Another example, the obtained points in the different weight categories of boxing will be computed to determine the sport of boxing ranking.
5) The points for each sport will be multiplied by a coefficient based of its universality and popularity.
6) All the countries that will be taken in consideration are recognized by the IOC. In the case of Great Britain in the sports of football or rugby, we will the points earned by the best ranking obtained by either England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland.
As an indicator of universality, we will take in consideration the number of countries participating in each sport in the Summer Olympics.
As an indicator of popularity, we will take in consideration the money that this sport is generating in the Olympics (as an indicator of revenues, we will consider the calculus made by the IOC to determine the revenue distribution for the 2016 Summer Games).
For the winter sports, coefficients were put based on Winter Olympics media ratings and their comparison with Summer Olympics media ratings.
With this methodology, the 204 countries that have national Olympic committees will be included. This will give an idea for all the national sport authorities on their ranking in international sport competitions.
For the year 2015, a deeper research will be made on the popularity and universality of each sport, and some non-Olympic sports will be taken in consideration on the sole condition that their popularity and universality will be higher than at least one of the Olympic sport.
As for now, the top 5 countries are in order: USA, Russia, Germany, China and France, while Lebanon is 95.
