28 Sep. 2016- Madrid made it three draws in two weeks after being unable to hold off Dortmund in the closing minutes of their Champions League match-up. In what was a back and forth, action filled game, both teams walked away with a point to remain atop group F.
Wasting little time, Real Madrid got the first strike on goal three minutes into the game. A Ronaldo free-kick was denied by Burki. Soon after, Dortmund produced a free-kick of their own, only for Keylor Navas to deny them a goal as well. It was the visitors however that took an early lead. Minutes after a controversial no call on Ronaldo, James found Gareth Bale running down the right. Bale would go on to set up the 3-time Ballon D’or winner with a back-heel pass to finish off, giving Madrid a 1-0 lead. Dortmund continued to fight back, doing everything to tie the game. Just before the end of the half, they received just that. A Keylor Navas save would bounce off of Raphael Varane’s head straight to Aubameyang’s foot for the easy tap in.
All tied up entering the second half, it was the hosts that turned things up a notch. With Madrid sitting on the counter-attack, Dortmund would come close to taking the lead on several occasions. Not to say Madrid didn’t create chances of their own. In fact, they took the lead once again thanks to a spectacular cross from Ronaldo. Benzema’s finish to the former’s cross would bounce off the post allowing Varane to redeam himself, and give his side a 2-1 lead. Still, Dortmund continued to be the aggressors as they challenged the vistor’s defense time after time. With time winding down, the German powerhouse again tied the game. Former Chelsea man Andre Shurrle, left all alone, brought the game back at level.
Looking back, both sides should be happy with the result. However, Madrid need to get back to their winning ways after two long weeks. Dortmund on the other hand had won four straight games before yesterday. Tune into more Champions League action tonight as Atletico Madrid take on Bayern Munich.
