09 Sep. 2015 – The Lebanon Water Festival will hold its night water ski show on September 12 and its day water ski show on September 13, 2015 in Tyre. The shows will include, among others, ballerina skiers and jumps, slalom, pyramids, wakeboarding and a ski show lit by fireworks and will be held on Tyre’s main corniche, between the Islamic University and the Rest House. Lebanese athletes such as Silvio Chiha as well as national water ski champions Rachael Zenk, Kelley Nemec, Jeremy Armstrong, Joe Sawaka, Marc Voisard, Taylor Voisard, and Shauna Pasanen, from the United States, will take part in the show.
Since 2012, the water ski shows have considerably increased in popularity. Last year, more than 12 000 people from Tyre and the surrounding regions attended the event. “People are really looking forward to this event. Many of them come from outside Tyre to watch the show. We are hoping to attract more than 15 000 people for the night show and more than 12 000 for the day show this year. This festival is very good for the city as it attracts tourists and therefore helps the economy. The city’s hotels are always fully booked during the Lebanon Water Festival”, explains Salah Sebraoui, Deputy Mayor of Tyre.
The water ski shows are also an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of the preservation and depollution of Tyre’s coastline and sea. In the past years, the municipality has put a lot of efforts into preventing illegal fishing and creating a natural reserve to protect underwater Phoenician ruins and marine life.
“The municipality of Tyre is working hard to prevent illegal fishing and develop sustainable fishing in Tyre with the Drosos Foundation in Switzerland. We are also working on creating an underwater trail to protect ruins and endangered species with French ONG Aresmar and MedPAN, the network of Mediterranean marine protected area managers, which should be ready by June 2016. All these initiatives will help us create an official marine natural reserve which will comprise Tyre’s islets, the Jammal region and the sea in front of the city’s coastal natural reserve”, says Nabigha Dakik from Tyre’s Natural Reserve.
The water ski shows will be followed by a crafts exhibition organized by the municipality of Tyre and LEDA, which will be held at the Islamic University on Friday and on the corniche on Saturday.
