Best 10 Lebanese Athletics Performances in the Hammer Throw Since 2010

13 Oct. 2016 – Hammer throw is one of the four throwing events in track and field and it’s been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900. We had to wait 95 years for the women’s hammer throw mark to be ratified by the Intentional Federation. The women’s event made its debut at Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

In Lebanon, before the great achievement of Jean Claude Rabbat winning the Asian Games Gold medal, the first athlete to ever win an Asian medal was Jeanette Ayoub in the Discus Throw back in 1983. Jeanette still holds the National record in hammer throw with 32.22m.

In the men’s hammer throw, Abdallah Chahine, who used to train and compete in the US, set the National record back in 2013 with a throw over 58 meters. He also competed in Lebanon but we haven’t heard of him since 2014. Therefore, you will find below two tables, one in which only Abdallah figues and the other one is the best performances without Chahine’s performances just to see where the Lebanese level stands without him.

We realize that the gap between Abdallah and the Lebanese Army athlete is more than 10 meters. On the other hand, Mohamad Khatib was dominant until he retired in 2011, after him the domination of the Lebanese Army continued with Georges Hachem. Today there is a young athlete from the Army, Majed Abou Omar who will probably be the future of Hammer throw in Lebanon.

In the women’s, there is one person who revived hammer throw after a very long absence. A woman who works in silence, who encourages the young athletes in her school and who’s trying to build a new generation of throwers. This amazing woman is Carine Bitchakjian who’s today one of the main coaches in Champville.

She realized that no one in Lebanon is doing the effort to raise the level of throwing in Lebanon, so she decided to include the four different throwing events in her School and start teaching the young students the principles of throwing and it payed off!

Carine discovered Mira Ibrahim who’s excelling in discus and hammer throw. But before that, the high jump record holder decided to try to the event by herself. She competed during the Lebanese Championship in 2014 and 2015 to push the other clubs to start competing in an event that was kept in the dark for too long. Therefore, CSJ’s great throwers as Nathalie Bejjani also started competing in Hammer throw and other young athletes as well.

It is a great initiative by Carine Bitchakjian who revived one of the forgotten discipline in Lebanon. Someone should also revive Pole Vault in our country, a discipline that almost doesn’t exist in Lebanon.
