22 Sep. 2015 – Bassel CHARAF imposed himself in the 8th Beirut International Chess Tournament by equaling the Russian Master in Chess Alexander RAYTSKI, who is ranked 8th in the world.
This was the surprise of the tournament organized by the Veterans Club committee of Notre Dame School, Freres Furn El Chebbak, on their own field. The tournament continues to the 28th September 2015, with the support of the former Minister Michel EDDE, and under the supervision of the Lebanese Chess Federation.
An amount of 7000$ is dedicated for prize money including 2000$ for the winner, a prize named after the passing Khaled KANIOUN.
CHARAF did an amazing performance in the third round collecting 2.5 points and eualling the Syrian Nabil CHAAR and the Russian RAYTSKI! While, on the other hand, nine participants are all leading with a total of 3/3 points: both masters the Dutch, who has Russian origins, Sergei TIVIAKOV (ranked number 1), and the Russian Sergei VOLKOV, Azir MIRZOIV from Azerbadjian, Kiril STOPAK from Belarus, Tighran KOTANJIAN from Armania, Sergei KASPAROV from Belarus, Mikhael SIMANTISV from Ukraine, the french master Manuel VAL and the Lebanese Mahdi KAOURI.
We should mention that the three of TIVIAKOV, MIRZOIV and STOPAK shared the first place in last year’s world championship, while KOTANJIAN won the title in 2012, 2012 and 2008.
