Dec 19. 2016- Here we go again. Blake Griffin is injured. After undergoing knee surgery, the star forward will be out until at least January. Last year, Griffin only managed to play 35 games during the regular season due to a quad injury, and breaking his hand after punching a former Clippers staff member. He then re-injured that same quad in the post-season.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not to say that Griffin is on his way to becoming the next Derrick Rose, but LA need to be smart about this to avoid history continuously repeating itself. Only a couple days ago, Head Coach Doc Rivers claimed Blake’s knee soreness wasn’t a big deal, and now he’s out for up to six weeks. I understand him maybe not wanting to reveal the extent of the injury to the public, but this is the team’s second best player behind Chris Paul. Without Blake, the small chance they do have of making noise in the playoffs will be gone faster than humor in a Liam Neeson movie.
Doc has to know that this might be it for the squad he’s had for the past few years. Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and JJ Redick are all free agents, along with a couple more of their role players. He has yet to take this team them beyond the second round of the playoffs, and mostly because of injuries, or fatigue due to zero help of the bench. Now, the Clippers actually have a decent bench that can help keep The Big Three fresh. At the end of the day it comes down to being smart, and Doc Rivers is indeed very smart. Even if it costs them a few games, he needs to be cautious with Blake’s return. If not, this season, like all of them before, will be a bust.
